Read NGPF's school-by-school analysis of financial education in America today
This week I invited Tanya of International Institute of Minnesota, Jenny of Boston Community Leadership Academy (MA) and Heidi of King George High School (VA) to the NGPF Podcast. They shared something in common: each earned NGPF Certifications in 7 different content areas through their work this summer and into the fall. Certification courses are offered by NGPF in Credit, Investing, Advanced Investing, Insurance, Paying for College, Banking and Budgeting and Taxes. In this podcast, you will hear these amazing educators discuss their motivation for taking these courses and the impact these courses had on their instruction this fall. Finally, they will also discuss a secondary benefit of how they have incorporated what they learned in their own financial lives. Enjoy!

Quotes:
“Not only did we get your [NGPF] material, but other people were putting things in the chat, like resources that you can use that fit just right in. It was like a giant brainstorm. Yes, we were learning but we were learning from everybody.” -Heidi
“We go through a lot of material [in the certification courses] and there’s an exam at the end to make sure you know your stuff. There’s a lot of shared resources, teachers talk to each other, and share strategies of how they approach different topics so that’s been really great for me.”-Jenny
“Watching all of the different teaching styles really helped me… Just seeing how ‘okay, you’re presenting this idea but this is completely different from anything I would come up with on my own’ was valuable. All the resources are awesome too but just even watching the different teaching styles and how information is being presented, I really really appreciated that.” -Tanya

Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
Ren started interning at NGPF in 2014, and worked part-time through high school and college. With his knowledge growing alongside NGPF, he joined the team to work full-time after graduating from college in 2020. He is also the producer of the NGPF podcast. During his free time, he likes to try out coffees from different roasters across the world.
