Congrats to educators in the NGPF Community, Jason Bartholomew of Nansemond River High School and Patricia Adams of Glen Allen High School, whose students starred in this competition.
In 2013, W!se celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Financial Literacy Certification program and created the first national ranking of the 100 Best W!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance to recognize schools of excellence. The ranking is announced each year in April, which is National Financial Literacy Month.
On Thursday, April 12, Haverhill High School students participated in a “Credit For Life” fair that strives to teach students about managing money and balancing a budget. The event was established five years ago as part of a $60,000 grant secured through the state for financial literacy. This allowed the school to add Money Matters and other personal finance classes to the class offerings, with an additional $2,500 per year granted to cover the cost of this event.
Pedro Garcia said his parents have taught him that money itself is neutral; it’s how you get it and what you spend it on that matters. Junior Pedro Garcia has washed cars, sold fruit and done magic tricks to earn money. “I was raised in a culture of respect, hard work and honesty,” said the Northern High School junior. A native of Mexico, Pedro said he grew up washing cars, selling fruit and doing magic tricks to earn money to buy video games. And now that he’s saving for college, he expects to work hard to pay for that.
It was a clean sweep for Fredonia High School in this year’s MoneySKILL® Mania financial literacy competition, sponsored by the University at Buffalo School of Management and M&T Bank in high schools across Western New York. Kevin Seybold bested nearly 1,000 students in the 11th annual competition, which tests students’ proficiency with basic money management concepts, including budgeting, income, credit and insurance.
After graduating with an education degree and spending 7 years in an elementary classroom, Laura made the switch to the non-profit world and loves interacting with students, educators and business professionals across the country. She is passionate about all students having access to high quality education and views personal finance education as one way to ‘level the playing field’. When Laura is not locating or creating high quality educational resources, you can find her mountain biking or searching for the best ramen in town!
